What's your least favourite album?

ophone » Jun 20 '18
Usually people ask which things you prefer. Let me do the contrary and ask you which Jamiroquai album you like the least.

As for me: With RDLS, Dynamite is an album that doesn't sound like an entity. Because I prefer the songs on RDLS, Dynamite is my least favourite Jamiroquai album. But don't get my wrong, I still like it, i just think it's not as strong as the others.

(I gave RDLS props for sounding warmer than the two previous albums. Automaton on the other hand brought the band back to produce an album that sounds like an entity. It reminds me of the concept album feeling I had with the first five albums, but especially with TROTSC and AFO.)

Totally agree, I'd say that "my least favourite" album is Dynamite for the same reason, it has great songs such as Starchild, Time Won't Wait, Seven Days,... but as a concept it doesn't fit properly. It's halfway from AFO and a more organic sound

I think it's a tie between Dynamite and RDLS because both have things I really like and dislike.
Dynamite has some powerful individual hits like Seven Days, Starchild and DGHAC but the second half doesn't hold up very well. RDLS doesn't have powerful tracks, but I like the lyrics and the overall feel of the album, which is much more 'live'. So I don't know. Luckily I don't think they have a "bad" album. All of them are very well put together even if they have some so-so tracks.

It's not easy to say because each has it's own charm. But I would say between album 5, 6 and 7.

Well, today, my least favourite album is Dynamite because of the general structure which reveals the lack of entity. I like it anyway because there is some very good and shiny tracks like Seven Days, Dynamite, Starchid, Talullah and the best one Time Won't Wait.

But 10 years ago it was without a doubt a funk odyssey : It's, for me, the coldest Jamiroquai album ever : the electronic drums, the melancholia through out ALL the lyrics, the tiny presence of the brass, the disappearing of the Yiddaki and scratches, the mix of acoustic and electronic tracks (still weird to me) its short running time (under 47 mn !)...it was a HUGE disappointement at first (I remember that I prefered the small hidden track So good to feel real to the entire album ! Maybe because I expected a "Super" Synkronized at that time ! )

Next I could heard the Test Pressing Version, which I prefer by far, and I understood that Sony ruins the original project with its infamous cissors !

The interludes disappered, the original name of the album (A 2001 A Funk Odyssey ) and the global concept too. What a pity !

A funk Odyssey is apart in the Jamiroquai discgraphy. It's like an electro-disco-funk soundtrack which would has been perfect with Do It Like We Used To Do, Everybody's Going To The Moon and the Album title's track (plus Canabliss). Maybe in a Deluxe Edition one day !

I've Learn to appreciate it with the years.

I like very much RDLS. With tracks like Smile, Hang It Over and Now We're Alone instead of White Knuckle Ride, Hurtin and Blue Sky, the story would has been different. By the way Fast Persuader is one of the best Jamiroquai track ever in m'y opinion.

I have strictly not any problem with the first four albums and the last one Automaton, the album I was waiting for since 2000.

A Funk Odyssey is like a perfectly uneven experiment. I think, as you mentioned, with DILWUTD, EGTTM, Cannabliss and Funk Odyssey, they were creating some very very interesting stuff, with Rob giving a new edge to the music but with a touch of their earlier stuff (Toby was still around!), which is why I appreciate that record much more than let's say Dynamite.
There was a real effort in pushing things forward, with electronica, disco and bossa nova co-existing with each other (TZO next to POML is so weird yet so refreshing). I always get the feeling that their best stuff (at least in the last 3 or 4 albums) are still in the unreleased, the unknown.

I see I'm not the only one looking forward for an AFO Special Edition including all released tracks plus A Funk Odyssey and Cannabliss

I'll keep dreaming with this thinking

Least favourite? I'm going to be controversial and say Travelling Without Moving. Ok, the first half is great, even though I don't rate Cosmic Girl and Alright as much as most people. But from track 7 onwards, the album loses its energy and is pretty unexciting, apart from the title track.

But I don't expect many people to agree with me!

I've got that feeling too Dyego : I really think that their best stuff is still unreleased : Symphonized ("pieces of broken dream" according to the King Of A Day lyrics, a final fantasy to me/us !),

The outtakes from 2001 A Funk Odyssey (yes, I'm 100% agree : It's a very interesting time of experimentation, with the additional tracks we've been talking, it would be a killer album !)

Look to all the outtakes from 2002 to 2010 (Canabliss, Shoot The Moon, Smile...).

I remember that in an interview, Sola said that one of his favourite track is an outtake but he's not allowed to talking about, and the boys absolutly loved Your Window Is A Crazy Television".

Unfortunately the majors often kill the artists original vision

I hope that one day, we'll have the complete sessions recordings of all the album. It would be my Jamiroquai ultimate dream !
